PRODUCTS: Hey Doll, Where’d You Get That Kachina Dress?
|
My-West’s fashion savvy friend, Diane, turned us on to the latest fashion to hit Paris this year. Japanese designer Issey Miyake who was inspired as a youth by Japanese artist Isamu Inokuma’s paintings and sketches of Kachina Dolls, has created a new line of summer clothing based on those early sketches.

PRODUCTS: Find of the Day: On the Fringe
PRODUCTS: Head Concho – What a Waist!
|
The Navaho especially had a penchant for personal adornment and in their quest for raw material the artisans would even melt down US coins which at the time yielded the best silver for smithing….(kind of makes you wonder what kind of sludge they’d come up with if they tried it these days!).

PRODUCTS: Shop ‘Til You’re Saddle Sore – Five Favorite Online Western Shops
|
In 2001, I defiantly predicted that Online shopping would go nowhere because people need the tactile senses…touching fabric, trying things on. But thankfully more imaginative minds prevailed because the following sites are a pleasure to browse through…come to think of it, that’s what browsers are for.

Nathan Turk known as the “cowboy tailor” created custom western couture for Tom Mix, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, the Maddox Brothers, Patsy Cline, Elvis and many other country-western entertainers from the 1930s through the 70s. PRODUCTS: If a Gal Can Swagger, This is the Dress for It
|
Admit it, there is not a girl in the West who doesn’t like the sound, feel and swagger of a swooshing dress. High fashion in the 1950s, the Squaw dress, also known as the Fiesta dress, Patio dress, Rick-Rack dress, and the Patsy Cline dress was breezy, comfortable and it swooshed when you walked.

PRODUCTS: Vintage Find of the Day: Pick up the Gauntlet
|
Whether demure or daring, cowgirls who saddled up for the ranch or just rode out for a stroll were always in style with these hand tooled gloves. For women who had a passion for the outdoors, protecting their skin was a challenge. Besides the obvious protection from the weather, the right gloves allowed them to handle rawhide reins, ride through tall grasses, brush willows aside, pick up baby calves, or slap a man if they needed to...

PRODUCTS: Vintage Find of the Day: Cowgirl Gloves
|
Elizabeth Taylor wore them in Giant, Stetson gloves from the 1950s. Visible stitching down the backhand gives these wrist-length gloves the “cowgirl” look that supports Miss Taylor’s role as a ranch wife in Texas. Nothing finishes an outfit like a pair of gloves for that ‘pulled together’ look that is so uncommon, but so attractive. You can wear these gloves to create your own style and look charming year around.

PRODUCTS: White’s Boots – These Boots are Made for Workin’
|
...The shop owner told me that the best way to break them in (outside of actually working in them, perhaps) was to put them on and soak them through so they’d form to my foot. So, in the afternoon, after a game of catch with my son, I put on my new boots and stepped into Billings Creek for a soak.
And that is the exact moment my Uncle Robert chose to stop by and catch me, shirtless, with nothing on but cut offs and a pair of White’s Boots reaching almost up to my knee caps…standing in the middle of a creek. He flashed his trademark million dollar smile...

PRODUCTS: BP Spurs: Guaranteed Against Complaint or Defect
|
by Jim Poulton
I must confess to a bias. We’re talking about my big brother. Among all kinds of other things he’s done in his life, he’s a spur-maker. He makes them by hand in a little metal working shop he’s built on his ranch in southern Utah. You’re probably asking: Spur-making? By hand? They still do that? And the answer is Yes they still do that, but ‘they’ is only a few guys in the world. It’s a dying art. And my brother decided several years ago that he was going to help preserve it.
And take a look at these spurs ...

PRODUCTS: Cowboy Coffee - The Pony Espresso, Part Two
|
“... I doubled the dosage, two heaping tablespoons for each cup and two heaping for the pot. I cracked an egg and cupped out the yolk and dropped shells and white into the pot, for I know nothing that polishes coffee and makes it shine like that. The air was still very cold, and a cold night was coming...”
John Steinbeck, Travels With Charley
That’s not a recipe for coffee. That’s a recipe for happiness.

“Don’t mix good whiskey with water – unless you’re out of good whiskey…” - Texas Bix Bender
How do you critique a whiskey you’ve never tasted? How do you reflect on flavor and aroma and finish when your preferences in booze have always favored quantity over quality? Well, you defer to the sober opinions of the experts.
